ManSEDS is running three free hands‑on introductory programmes during the first four teaching weeks of Semester 1, giving new students the chance to design, build, and test real aerospace systems from day one. These programmes are open to all disciplines and all year groups, with a particular focus on helping first‑year students settle into university life through practical, confidence‑building engineering.
Last year’s Introduction to Rocketry welcomed over 70 students and led to a major increase in long‑term engagement across the society. With ManSEDS now supporting 170+ members and over 80 active contributors to technical projects, these programmes form a key part of how we welcome new students and demonstrate our capability to the School of Engineering and industry partners.
All programmes are completely free, ensuring accessibility for students from all backgrounds.
Design, build, and launch your own rocket.
You’ll learn stability, thrust, recovery systems, CAD design, and practical assembly, finishing with two launch days at Sale Water Park
Build your own flight computer.
You’ll gain experience in breadboarding, programming, PCB assembly, soldering, sensor integration, and flight testing.
Build your own personal rover platform.
You’ll progress through mechanical assembly, motor control, sensors, obstacle avoidance, and basic autonomy.
The programmes take place during the first four teaching weeks of Semester 1, mainly on Wednesday afternoons. The structure is simple:
Week 1: Society introduction + programme selection + First practical workshop
Week 2: Practical workshop
Weeks 3–4: Testing, launches, and interdisciplinary collaboration
In Week 5, students can transition into ManSEDS’ major project teams, including national competitions in rocketry, rover engineering, and satellite development, as well as internal Reaserch and Development such as our hybrid rocket engine programme planned for flight next year.
This progression pathway is a core strength of ManSEDS: students move seamlessly from introductory activities into advanced engineering work.
