Rocketry was the very first activity ManSEDS ever ran. Our journey began in 2014, when a small team entered the National Rocketry Championship (NRC) for the first time. That early project laid the foundations for everything that followed, and over the past decade, rocketry has grown into our largest and most active department, involving more students, more launches, and more engineering than any other part of the society.
Today, our Rocketry Department designs, builds, and launches a wide range of vehicles, from small training rockets to high‑power systems and supersonic experimental flights. We run regular launch days, support schools through UKROC outreach, and provide students with hands‑on experience in stability, aerodynamics, electronics, recovery systems, and safe launch operations. We are also unique in being able to offer independent launch opportunities for testing rockets before competitions, with full infrastructure, risk assessments, and insurance already in place.
Our National Rocketry Championship teams design and build competition rockets to meet strict performance criteria, including target altitude, safe recovery, and payload protection. Students learn stability analysis, simulation, construction techniques, and competition‑style iterative testing.
Launch4Change is a composite‑rocket programme aimed at developing high‑performance vehicles capable of supersonic flight and altitudes over 6 km. Students work on advanced structures, avionics, recovery systems, and in‑flight experiments. This project is funded by ARIA and supported by the University of Durham.
The Research & Development Team focuses on experimental rocketry, including new airframes, fin designs, electronics systems, and multi‑stage configurations. This team regularly conducts high‑power launches and tests new concepts that feed into future ManSEDS missions.
The Giant Cardboard Rocket is an experimental project exploring how lightweight, recyclable materials natably packaging cardboard can be used in large‑scale rocket structures.
Over the years, ManSEDS has built and launched dozens of rockets, including _______, high‑power vehicles, dual‑deploy systems, and experimental payload flights. These projects form the backbone of our rocketry heritage and continue to inspire new members each year.
Rocketry gives students a rare chance to work on real flight hardware at university level. It helps develop:
